In this discussion, you will explore how criminal justice professionals and offenders are using social media.
As you create your initial post, consider the following quotation from Sgt. Jason Cullum of the Evansville, Indiana, police department:
The use of social media has helped us identify suspects within minutes of an image being posted. The thought of being featured on a social media post is very unappealing to criminals and especially our youth who truly understand the viral nature of social media.
Address the following in your initial post:
Describe how offenders may use social media.
Describe how criminal justice professionals may use social media.
Explain why it is important for law enforcement to be present on social media.
In response to two of your peers, discuss how the social media use described in the initial post can affect the community.

Good day Professor and classmates,
In the age of technology and social media, it is particularly easy for criminals to use social media to choose their targets. As with most people they all use some form of website to make connections with employers and family. Social networking “enable users to create online profiles that include the posting of recent personal and professional information about their lives through pictures, videos, and related content” (2011). This allows the criminals to not only select their target but also track their activities. For example, websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and even Linkedin people post photos of themselves, family members, jobs, and where they live. They even let it be known on social media when they are going on vacation and how long they will be gone. By doing this it lets the criminal know that the targets house will be empty for so long. This can lead to other issues such as identity theft that can be utilized for financial gain.
As for law enforcement utilizing social media it is considered a great communication tool for them to use. It is a great tool to reach the community, for example facebook.com/BCSOGA (Bartow County Sheriff’s Office) posts about looking for individuals, hiring events, and emergency situations that may be occurring. Social media is also very helpful when it pertains to investigations and wanted individuals. “When individuals post content on social media platforms without audience restrictions, anyone who visits the platforms—including law enforcement—can access this content. Law enforcement does not need to obtain court authorization to view content that has been published for any and all to see, like a sign in one’s yard” (Finklea, 2022).

Hello Class,
Social media is helpful for many people, especially when it comes to staying in touch with family and friends, but criminal offenders also take use of social media. Photos of your family, kids, activities you’ve been to, etc. may be posted online, enabling quick social interaction. Unfortunately, disclosing this information increases the likelihood of someone becoming a target of fraud or other illegal activity. Criminals frequently breach social media accounts or utilize your postings to determine when you are not at home. Without social media, child exploitation investigations would be impossible to resolve (Lexipol, 2021). Due to the endless number of possible victims that social media provides who can be recognized through shared content and user profiles also create chances for human trafficking and prostitution (Police Executive Forum, 2018). You become more open to giving thieves access to your personal information, such as banking credentials, when you shop online and click on advertisements. Social media is widely used by consumers to contact loved ones and advertise their businesses, but it can also serve as a shelter for criminals.
The use of social media by criminals has been advantageous for law enforcement, which frequently uses it to look into crimes. Posts on social media are another method used by agencies to inform the public. This information may relate to current affairs, emergencies, alerts, or the dissemination of information about an event or occurrence. Social media pages are being used more regularly and social media pages by law enforcement organizations nationwide. On a department or agency’s social media page, information about the neighborhood, advice, and details about upcoming activities are often shared. When in the field, public information officers (PIOs) also utilize social media to publish comprehensive reports (Law Enforcement and Public Safety Leadership, 2021). Police agencies often use social media to display images of suspects, invite tips from the public, get comments, and establish relationships with the neighborhood.
